Alkagesta has added EU Emissions Trading System allowances to its carbon trading offering, according to a report from Alkagesta Newsroom. The company said the development had been covered by Ship & Bunker, Ship.energy and Bioenergy International. The addition places EU ETS allowances alongside its existing CORSIA-eligible SAF and biofuels business, broadening the range of carbon-related products it offers through its trading desk.
The newsroom report said Ship.energy had also highlighted the inclusion of the expanded ETS2 in Alkagesta’s offering, with that scheme due to take effect in 2028. It noted that the EU ETS has operated since 2005 and was extended to shipping in January 2024. The report presented the scheme’s reach beyond the European Union as relevant to Alkagesta’s international trading operations, which span energy, fuels, fertilisers and related commodity markets.
Anthony Guida, Alkagesta’s Biofuels Trading Desk Lead, linked the move to the company’s ability to address a broader range of client carbon obligations through one desk. In comments reproduced by Alkagesta Newsroom and attributed to the trade publications, he said trading EU ETS allowances alongside the company’s CORSIA-eligible SAF and biofuels activities would expand the support available to customers. His comments positioned the allowance offering as complementary to the company’s physical fuel business rather than as a separate service.
Guida also pointed to the forthcoming inclusion of smaller businesses under ETS2 and rising ReFuelEU blending requirements as reasons for bringing these activities together. He argued that a trading partner able to provide allowances, credits and physical fuel supply was becoming more valuable as those requirements developed. Alkagesta’s announcement therefore framed the expansion around a combined offering for clients facing carbon obligations and fuel requirements, with the company presenting its existing trading activities as a basis for supporting that shift.
